Schematic Design Sketch

Being true to Federal style proportions in plan, section and elevation, the signature goal of the new Tennessee State Bank design concept was “detail without ornamentation,” as the architecture reflects the 35+ year old regional bank’s solid and traditional qualities. Tennessee State Bank’s success is marked by their conservative values and personal approach to banking, and they wanted to make a strong, yet inviting statement about the security of their accounts. The exterior is wrapped entirely with rough and smooth limestone blocks, accentuating the material’s natural qualities. The building, as an object of permanence, sits in stark contrast to the rows of commercial “lifestyle” developments packed along this boulevard.
Design Development Perspective

The bank occupies the entirety of the first floor for daily operations, and half of the second floor for training and corporate functions. Future tenant spaces take up the remainder of the second and the third floors with over 10,000 sf of leasable tenant space. Interior design concepts focused on supporting the Federal style theme, enhancing the traditional qualities of the space while providing a modern banking environment that would be both comfortable and clean. The plan is centered on a two-story atrium with a custom, two-tier light fixture as the centerpiece of the space.

Studio Four Design worked closely with the masonry sub-contractor and limestone manufacturer during the design process, recommending a cost-effective solution for installation which eliminated the need for expensive miscellaneous steel bracing. The result was a product that has become the masonry sub’s best-executed project in their two-decade history, and has provided the limestone manufacturer an alternative way to promote the installation of their material.
Fun Fact: All window surrounds, cornices, railings, balustrades and columns on this project are solid, load-bearing limestone, stacked piece-by-piece to create the final look. (yes, even the 27-foot tall columns in front are solid).
